Vote John Cassleman for Pullman City Council, Ward 3

Pullman faces a number of headwinds: state regulations that don’t work well in Eastern Washington, numerous barriers to housing, dwindling childcare options, a shrinking water supply, and a stagnant downtown. No single city leader, business, or citizen is going to solve these problems. We need to enable all Pullmanites to play their role in building a better future.

My chief priority, if elected, will be connecting the various coalitions and communities within Pullman to work together toward our shared goals, and build proactive systems of communication, transparency, and accountability. I will work to remove barriers from our change-makers and empower those who want to make a positive difference.

We can do it. Believe in Pullman.

Enable and Support Local Business

Local businesses are more than just a way for people to exchange goods or services; they are key in the creation of culture and a sense of place. Business-owners deserve to be consulted, to have reasonable rules applied consistently and fairly, and to have support navigating complex regulations and codes. The same applies to our non-profit businesses who serve the vital needs of our community. The city can make both practical and symbolic gestures to show our businesses that we appreciate their investment in Pullman, and understand the critical role they play in our community.

Power Pullman’s Potential

Pullman’s well-earned reputation for being a safe and stable place to live does not need to  exclude the pursuit of innovative ideas, big or small. I believe we can maintain this foundational safety and stability while utilizing small-scope initiatives to drive real change. For example, we can:

  • Promote pop-up shops & temporary use of vacant and other underutilized spaces.

  • Grant temporary exemptions to ordinances to promote strategic initiatives.

  • Regularly engage a wide body of stakeholders to understand potential opportunities and pitfalls.

  • Host or support local competitions as they help solve long standing problems.

Invest in the Future

I was born in Pullman, educated in Pullman, and chose to raise my children here. Our children, from preschool to university, are the pride of our city and vital to its wellbeing. We know that when children have more enrichment opportunities and support systems, they are more likely to thrive. Let’s build Pullman with our youth in mind and give them a reason to stay!

  • Support and incentivize childcare providers and mental health practitioners to move to or stay in Pullman

  • Capitalize on and continue to enhance the tremendous work of our Parks & Recreation Department and the Neill Public Library

  • Establish more opportunities for students and student groups to have an active and meaningful voice in city decisions

Engage in Courageous Conversations

Making progress on challenging issues, like childcare, housing, and our water supply, is much more likely when we have more voices and perspectives represented.  With each decision on the docket, I will communicate with, and listen to residents so we all understand trade-offs, long-term implications, and what’s at stake.
